“Cheap” Universities Identified
Latest student survey labels northern universities as cheapest places to study.
Yet another student survey was published this week and in our wise wisdom we thought that instead of telling you which university has the best course or most state-of-the-art facilities or best library, we thought we’d get right to the nitty gritty with what is definitely top of the agenda here at Student Cash Point- cold hard cash.*
In the Times Higher Education survey of over 100 UK institutions, 12,000 students were asked to rate a variety of things, from lecture content and accommodation right through to social life and community atmosphere.
Students were also asked to rate the cost of living at university, basing answers on local shops, bars and amenities.
Of the 101 institutions taking part, the universities of Swansea and Hull scored the best in this category. In fact, the majority of the “cheapest” places to study were found to be in Northern England and Scotland, with the few exceptions being campus universities- where students can expect to find heavily subsidised groceries and other living expenses on site.
The most expensive places of study were, of course, based in London, with the Royal Veterinary College and London Metropolitan universities scoring well below their northern counterparts.
The survey identified Loughborough University as what you could call a good ‘all-rounder’, receiving the best overall result and also scoring favourably with students when asked about their living expenses.
And to us that translates as cheap booze, even cheaper kebabs and definitely a couple of low cost supermarkets in the vicinity (mentioning no names, Aldi.)
